Essential Rules
Wildlife Safety Rules
These rules exist because animals are wild. Following them is not optional β it is the foundation of every safe safari experience.
Stay in the Vehicle
In national parks, remain inside your safari vehicle at all times during game drives. The vehicle is your safety barrier. Never stand on the roof or lean out beyond the open windows. Your guide will brief you on exit protocols at each location.
Follow Your Guide's Instructions
Your guide is trained to read wildlife behaviour. If they say stay quiet, stay quiet. If they say do not move, do not move. These instructions exist for your safety. Questioning them in the field puts everyone at risk.
Never Walk Ahead of Your Guide
On any walking safari or camp transfer, the guide always leads. Walking ahead β even a few steps β puts you in an animal's blind spot. Maintain visual contact with your guide at all times.
Maintain Distance from Animals
Never approach elephants on foot, even if they appear calm. Elephants can charge without warning. Hippos are the most dangerous animal in Africa β never get between a hippo and the water. Your guide manages all proximity decisions.
Camp Security Protocols
After dark, never walk outside your camp without a staff escort. Baboons and vervet monkeys can cause damage β keep tent doors zipped and valuables hidden. Your camp team will brief you on arrival.
Health
Health Considerations on Safari
Malaria
Present in safari areas below 1,800mProphylaxis recommended for all safari areas. Use DEET 30%+ repellent, wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk, sleep under a net. Serengeti, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara are malaria risk zones year-round.
The Ngorongoro Crater rim at 2,400m has minimal malaria risk. Consult your travel health clinic for personalised advice.
Yellow Fever
Required for some travellersRequired if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Recommended for all travellers by the WHO. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel.
Tanzania has no yellow fever transmission within the country, but the certificate is checked at border crossings and by airlines.
Water and Food
Standard travel precautionsDrink only bottled or treated water. Avoid raw food from street vendors. All Bobby Safaris partner camps provide filtered or bottled water. Bring oral rehydration salts in case of stomach upsets.
Traveller's diarrhoea is common when changing environments. Most cases resolve within 24-48 hours with hydration and rest.
Sun Exposure
Extreme UV year-roundApply SPF 50+ every 2-3 hours during game drives. Wear a wide-brimmed hat covering neck and ears. Bring quality sunglasses. You can get sunburned through a vehicle windscreen.
African sun is intense even on cloudy days. Morning game drives in open vehicles require as much protection as midday sun.
Altitude
Ngorongoro Crater rim at 2,400mThe crater rim is at 2,400m β some visitors experience mild altitude effects. The crater floor is at 1,800m. If you have cardiac or respiratory conditions, consult your doctor. Effects are mild for most healthy adults.
The steep descent and ascent between rim and floor involves winding roads. Those sensitive to pressure changes may feel discomfort.
