The core distinction
The difference is not the camps, the vehicles, or the price
At the ultra-luxury level, most operators use similar camps, similar vehicles, and similar routes. The differentiation is not in the hardware — it is in the software. The knowledge, the relationships, the personal attention, the operational depth that a 48-year-old family company brings to your journey cannot be assembled from a supplier catalogue.
Bobby Safaris is not a company that sells safaris. It is a family that has been hosting guests in Tanzania since 1978. When you book with us, you are not a booking number in a system. You are a guest of the Kassim family, and the person who answers your WhatsApp message is the person who will be responsible for your experience from start to finish.

What you get with Bobby
Four things that do not scale
01
We are the hosts, not the broker
When you travel with Bobby Safaris, you are being hosted by the Kassim family. We do not sell you to another operator. We do not sub-contract your safari to a ground handler. We are the operator — in the Serengeti, in the vehicle, in the relationship with the camp managers. Everything that happens on your safari connects back to us.
02
Since 1978 — four generations of accumulated knowledge
Our senior guide Juma has been with us for 28 years. He knows where the leopards den in every season. He knows which manager at which camp prepares the best meals. He knows which valley holds the best cheetah viewing in July. This is accumulated field knowledge that cannot be purchased or replicated.
03
You are not a booking number
Don Kassim answers his own WhatsApp. When you message, you are not speaking with a reservations agent who has never been to Tanzania. You are speaking with the person who has guided more than 800 safaris, who knows every camp we use, and who will be personally invested in your experience from the first message to your return home.
04
We turn down more bookings than we accept
We do not optimise for volume. We optimise for the quality of the experience that earns a referral. If we cannot deliver the experience that a guest deserves — because the season is wrong, or the camp is not available, or we do not have the right guide free — we say so. This is not a sales strategy. It is an operational philosophy that explains why the guests who travel with us tend to come back.
Head to head
Bobby Safaris vs mass-market safari operators
| Dimension | Bobby Safaris | Mass-market operator |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Kassim family, Arusha, Tanzania. Registered and operating in Tanzania since 1978. No foreign parent company, no franchise. | Varies: international ownership, franchise models, or local partners of foreign brands. Often owned by a holding company incorporated outside Tanzania. |
| Itinerary design | Every itinerary is designed by Don Kassim after a personal conversation. No two Bobby Safaris are the same. Your journey is a response to you. | Itineraries are assembled from a contracted supplier portfolio. The product team builds them from available camps and routes, not from a deep knowledge of your specific trip. |
| Who you contact | Don Kassim. Directly. By WhatsApp. The person who designs your safari is the person you speak with, before, during, and after your journey. | Reservations call centre. Communication through a ticketing system. You may speak with a different person at each stage of the process. |
| Guide employment | Full-time, long-term employees. Our senior guides have 15-30 years of field experience. They are not contractors hired per departure. | Contract guides hired from a pool for individual departures. No continuity of relationship between guide and guest, or between guide and operator. |
| Geographic focus | Tanzania only. All our expertise, relationships, and operational knowledge is concentrated in one country. | Most operators cover multiple African countries simultaneously. Expertise is distributed across destinations rather than concentrated. |
| Group structure | Private only. Your vehicle, your pace, your schedule. We do not run shared group departures. | Shared group departures are standard. You travel with strangers, on a fixed schedule, with a guide managing multiple guests simultaneously. |
| Scale and availability | We take fewer clients than we could. We would rather do twelve journeys properly than fifty adequately. We regularly turn down bookings. | Volume-focused operations. Availability is managed through large-scale capacity, multiple departures per week, and high guest throughput. |
| Longevity and reputation | 48 years of operation, four generations of the Kassim family. Our reputation is built one guest at a time, over decades. | Reputation is primarily a marketing product — built through awards, press coverage, and brand visibility, not exclusively through guest experience. |
