Serengeti & Zanzibar

Tanzania and Zanzibar are not competing destinations — they are complementary ones. The safari is demanding in the best sense: early mornings, extraordinary sights, the particular fatigue that comes from being fully present in an intense landscape for days at a time. Zanzibar provides the resolution that the safari needs. It is not an afterthought. It is the second half of an experience that began with the first lion hunt you witnessed at dawn.

Logistically, the combination is straightforward. A flight from the Serengeti or Ngorongoro to Zanzibar takes ninety minutes. There is no long drive, no complicated connection. You land in Stone Town in the afternoon, transfer to your beach accommodation, and within an hour you are in an entirely different world — the Indian Ocean instead of the savannah, the call to prayer instead of the lion's roar, the smell of cloves and sea instead of dust and acacia.

The camps and guides on the safari portion are Don Kassim and the private vehicles of Bobby Safaris. The beach accommodation on Zanzibar is selected with the same criteria: location, intimacy, management quality, and genuine character. We do not use the large resort properties that appear in tour brochures. We use the small, well-managed establishments that we would choose for our own families.

Four to five days in the Serengeti is the right amount of time to develop a genuine relationship with the landscape. You are not racing from one highlight to the next — you are spending sustained time in the wildlife-richest regions of the park, guided by someone who has been tracking the resident populations for decades. Don Kassim positions the vehicle where the animals are, not where the roads take you. You linger when something extraordinary is unfolding. You return to the same kopje three mornings running because your guide knows what lives there.

In the northern Serengeti between July and October, the Mara River crossings are the centrepiece — two million wildebeest moving through the Mara River system in one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth. Outside of crossing season, the western corridor and the central Seronera valley offer extraordinary resident wildlife: leopards in acacia trees, lion prides on the hunt, elephant herds moving through the riverine forest, and the ancient rhythms of a landscape that operates on its own schedule.

We typically include a private descent of Ngorongoro Crater on the way — a black rhino sighting is genuinely possible in the caldera, and the landscape itself, when you first see the Crater floor from the descending road, stops conversation. The combination of the Crater and the Serengeti in five days gives you both the concentrated wildlife of the caldera and the expansive landscapes of the plains.

Zanzibar is not a beach resort with a cultural footnote. Stone Town — the ancient Swahili capital on the island's west coast — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary depth and atmosphere. The narrow streets, the Omani Arab architecture, the history as the centre of the Indian Ocean spice trade: Stone Town is one of the most compelling small cities in Africa, and it is entirely walkable from your accommodation.

Beyond Stone Town, the Zanzibar archipelago offers some of the finest beaches in the Indian Ocean. The east coast beaches — Pongwe, Bwejuu, Jambiani — are renowned for their turquoise water, their coral gardens excellent for snorkelling, and their unhurried, genuinely local character. The northern beaches around Nungwi and Kendwa are more lively but still retain the easy pace that makes Zanzibar the right place to be after the Serengeti.

A half-day visit to a spice farm — ginger, cardamom, clove, cinnamon — is included in most Zanzibar itineraries and is genuinely worthwhile. The plantations are beautiful, the smells extraordinary, and the knowledge that you are standing in the reason Zanzibar became historically significant — the spice trade — adds a layer of meaning that a beach holiday alone cannot provide.
