Guest Story

"I thought I knew what a safari was. I had done Ngorongoro and the Serengeti and I had seen the Big Five and I had come home satisfied. The second time, with David, I realised I had been a tourist. This time, I was a guest."

— Sarah Cole, returning to Tanzania for the second time

Sarah Cole had done the Northern Circuit eight years before, on a guided group safari arranged through a European operator. She had loved it — seen the migration, descended into Ngorongoro, watched a leopard in a tree outside Seronera. She had come home and told everyone it was the best trip of her life.

When she came back with David, her partner of three years, she was clear about what she wanted: not the same trip, but a deeper one. She wanted David to see what she had seen, but she wanted to understand it better herself. She wanted a guide who would answer questions the first guide had not had time for. She wanted to go to places the first itinerary had not reached.

"The first time, I watched the migration and I thought: that is extraordinary. The second time, with our guide Mosi, I understood why the wildebeest cross where they cross, and what the hippos do to the river chemistry, and why the crocodiles are waiting in that specific place. Understanding it changed everything. David said it was like watching a documentary and then reading the research behind it."

— Sarah Cole

What the Second Safari Added

Don's itinerary for the Coles was deliberately different from what Sarah had done the first time. Three nights in the central Serengeti — where Sarah had never been, only passed through. Two nights at a private conservancy adjoining the Lamai Wedge, where the vehicle count was limited to six and the guiding was at a level Sarah had not known existed. A walking safari with Mosi in the early morning — not the game drive version, but an actual walk, with a rifle and forty years of experience between the two guides.

The walking safari was the moment David said he finally understood what the whole thing was about. Not the animal checklist — the proximity, the vulnerability, the absolute awareness of being a biological organism in a landscape full of other organisms, all of whom had been there longer and knew it better. He said he finally got why people use the word "primal."

The Second Safari Is a Different Experience Entirely

Don works with return visitors to design trips that go beyond the circuit — into the layers that only become visible after you have been once.

Common Questions

Return Safari Questions

Is Tanzania worth revisiting?

Tanzania rewards repetition more than almost any destination. The Serengeti changes completely by season, and the experiences available to return visitors — private conservancies, fly-camping, specialist guiding — are entirely different from the classic circuit.

What should a return safari include differently?

A return itinerary should reflect the traveller you are now. Fly-camping instead of permanent camps, private conservancies instead of the main park, specialist interests — birds, photography, walking. Ask yourself: knowing what I know now, what would I design?

Can Bobby Safaris arrange exclusive access for return visitors?

Yes. Return visitors often want access that is genuinely difficult to arrange — private conservancies, seasonal fly-camp positions, guide relationships built over years. Don has specific relationships that allow access that larger operators cannot offer.
