Guest Story
"We have travelled with the largest names in luxury safari. Bobby Safaris is different. There is no corporate layer between you and the experience. Don himself called us before the trip, asked about our interests, and designed every day around what mattered to us. The result was the most personal, most moving journey we have ever taken."
— Robert & Anne Whitfield, Toronto, Canada
Robert Whitfield is not an easy customer. He has stayed at premier ultra-luxury operators, at the camps operated by the largest names in African luxury travel. He knows what the premium tier of safari travel looks like, and he has strong opinions about where it falls short. When his travel agent suggested Bobby Safaris, he was resistant.
What changed his mind was a phone call. Not from a sales team, not from a booking coordinator — from Don himself. The call lasted forty-five minutes. Don asked about previous trips, about what had disappointed them, about what they were hoping to feel during this particular journey. By the end of the call, Robert had agreed to let Bobby Safaris design something.
The Itinerary That Could Not Have Existed Otherwise
The Whitfields' journey was not a standard itinerary with optional upgrades. It was assembled specifically for them. Don had asked Robert about his particular interest in predator behaviour — specifically, his curiosity about how lion prides make decisions. Anne had mentioned that she wanted time that was not structured around game drives. The result was an itinerary that included three days with a researcher in the Ndutu region who studies lion coalition behaviour, and a full day of unstructured time at a private camp in the central Serengeti — no schedule, no vehicle, just the landscape and whatever it offered.
"Anne's unscheduled day was the best day of the trip. We woke up without an alarm. We made coffee over a fire. We watched the plains change colour for four hours without speaking. I had forgotten that silence was something you could do on safari. Don had understood, without us quite articulating it, that what we needed was not more wildlife. It was less noise."
— Robert Whitfield
The Layer That Others Cannot Offer
What the Whitfields articulate most clearly about their experience is the difference between a luxury service and a personal one. "The large operators deliver an exceptional product," Anne says. "The rooms are beautiful. The food is excellent. The guides are knowledgeable. But you are always, at some level, a client in a system. At Bobby Safaris, we felt like guests in someone's home who happened to have done this a thousand times before."
Robert puts it in terms he has applied to all travel since. "The question I now ask any operator is: can I speak to the person who designed my trip? At Bobby Safaris, the answer is yes. That changes everything. When something needs to change — a camp that doesn't feel right, a drive that isn't working — there is no committee. There is one person who knows your name, knows your itinerary, and can fix it in a phone call."
Coming Back
The Whitfields have already rebooked. This time, they are adding a climbing extension — not to summit, but to walk the first few days of the Lemosho route with a Bobby Safaris guide and return to Arusha. Robert describes this as "the trip we are taking because the first trip made us realise we had been underestimating what Tanzania offers." They have been back twice since their first visit. Don knows their preferences well enough now that the itinerary design process takes less than an hour.

Common Questions
Custom Journey
How does Bobby Safaris compare to major luxury safari brands?
The major brands operate through management layers — your booking passes through sales, operations, ground handlers, and finally to the guide. At Bobby Safaris, Don takes your call, designs your itinerary, and follows up after your return. No gap between promise and delivery.
What does a bespoke safari actually cost?
Every bespoke safari is priced individually based on itinerary, season, accommodation level, and duration. Don provides a complete price breakdown before you commit, with no hidden costs. Comparable to mainstream luxury brands with better personal attention.
How far in advance should I book?
Peak season (July–October, January–February calving) requires 6–12 months. Shoulder seasons: 3–6 months. Don can advise on availability for your specific dates.
