The Serengeti is exceptional at any time of year. The question is not whether you will see wildlife — you will, in abundance — but what kind of experience you want. The Great Migration, the big cats, the green season blooms, or the quiet of the off-peak months. Each has its own character.
January — Calving Season Begins
The year begins in the southern Serengeti, where wildebeest are calving. Approximately 8,000 newborns arrive every day during peak January and February. Predator density is high — lions, cheetah, and hyena all take advantage of the vulnerable herds. The landscape is green and beautiful. This is one of the best times to visit if you want to see newborn wildlife and dramatic predator action.
March through May — The Long Rains
The long rains bring fewer visitors and lower prices. The Serengeti is green and lush, newborn animals are everywhere, and the birdlife is spectacular. Game viewing is still excellent, though some roads may be impassable. For experienced safari travelers who want to avoid crowds and experience the Serengeti at its most raw and beautiful, this is an underrated window.
June through October — The Dry Season
The dry season is the classic safari window. Water sources become the focus of wildlife activity, making game drives more predictable and reliable. The Great Migration reaches its northern circuit in July through September — this is when the wildebeest cross the Mara River in dramatic numbers. Predator sightings are excellent as wildlife concentrates around water. June and October offer good value and fewer vehicles at sightings.
November and December — The Short Rains
The short rains typically begin in November, transforming the landscape again. The herds begin their long migration back to the southern plains. December sees increasing numbers of visitors as the holiday season approaches. Wildlife viewing remains excellent, and the Christmas/New Year period is peak season for a reason — the Serengeti in December is extraordinary.
There is no bad time to visit the Serengeti. The best time depends on what you want to see and experience. We can help you match your interests with the optimal timing for your safari.
