Multi-Country Journeys

The East Africa Safari Collection

Tanzania is the heart of East Africa — and it connects to experiences that no other single destination can offer.

The Serengeti. Ngorongoro. The Great Migration. Tanzania's safari credentials stand on their own — and they are extraordinary. But Tanzania does not exist in isolation. It sits at the centre of East Africa, connected by short flights and established routes to some of the most remarkable experiences on the continent: Kenya's Maasai Mara, Rwanda's mountain gorillas, Uganda's chimpanzees.

A multi-country East Africa safari is not twice the logistics for twice the experience — it is a qualitatively different trip. The contrast between the vast golden plains of the Serengeti and the bamboo forests of Rwanda's volcanoes is not just landscape; it is an emotional and physical shift that makes both experiences more vivid for having been combined. For families evaluating a once-in-a-decade journey, our decision framework for multi-country East Africa travel walks through the sequencing, cost architecture, and trade-offs that matter before the first booking.

The Great Migration, Across Two Countries

Tanzania & Kenya

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem…

Wildebeest on the move across the Serengeti plains — the migration continues across the border into Kenya's Maasai Mara

The Great Migration moves between Tanzania and Kenya across the season — July to October is when both crossings are in play

For guests visiting during the river crossing months of July through October, adding Kenya's Maasai Mara to a Tanzania safari completes the migration story. The wildebeest cross from Tanzania into Kenya and back again throughout the season, and seeing both crossings — the Serengeti crossings in Tanzania and the Mara crossings in Kenya — is the most comprehensive Great Migration experience available. Beyond the migration, the Maasai Mara offers a slightly different safari character: the acacia-dotted plains, the higher concentration of cheetah, and the Mara River itself, which the herds must cross multiple times on their circuit.

A Tanzania and Kenya combination is straightforward — you cross at the border at Namanga, roughly three hours from the Serengeti. The change in atmosphere is subtle but distinct: Kenya's safari product has a different character, shaped by different operators and different conservation models.

Ideal For

Great Migration enthusiasts, July–October travellers, those wanting to see both countries' safari products

One Continent's Two Greatest Wildlife Experiences

Tanzania & Rwanda

The Serengeti's big cats and the Virunga mountain gorilla…

A family of mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, one of the world's great wildlife encounters

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda — a complement to Tanzania's safari experience, not a replacement for it

Mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is unlike any other wildlife encounter on earth. There is no equivalent experience: coming face to face with a family group of habituated gorillas, watching silverback males interact, infants play, and entire families move through the bamboo forest — it is a profound and humbling experience that regularly appears on lists of the most meaningful experiences a person can have. Rwanda is a short flight from Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Airport (via Nairobi or directly), and the combination of a Tanzania safari with a Rwanda gorilla trek has become one of East Africa's signature journeys.

The gorilla trek itself is not technically difficult — you do not need to be an athlete — but it involves 2–6 hours of hiking through steep, muddy forest at altitude. Two nights in Rwanda gives you two chances to trek (weather cancellations are the main risk) and time to explore Rwanda's extraordinary culture: the genocide memorial in Kigali is one of the most carefully and thoughtfully constructed historical sites we have visited anywhere in the world.

Ideal For

Generational travellers, wildlife enthusiasts, those wanting the most complete Africa trip possible

Recommended Duration

14–18 days

Chimpanzees, Source of the Nile, and the Classic Safari

Tanzania & Uganda

Uganda adds chimpanzee trekking, the Source of the Nile,…

Chimpanzee in Uganda's Kibale Forest — one of East Africa's most intimate wildlife encounters

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda's Kibale Forest — a different kind of primate experience from Tanzania's gorillas

Uganda is the most varied of East Africa's safari destinations — a country that encompasses the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the vast Lake Victoria, the powerful Murchison Falls, and some of Africa's most rewarding chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. For guests who have already done Tanzania and want to return for something different, or for those with a deep interest in primates and diverse ecosystems, Uganda is a remarkable addition. The chimpanzee trekking experience in Kibale is extraordinary — tracking habituated groups through dense forest, watching them hunt, feed, and interact at close quarters is one of Africa's most intimate wildlife encounters.

Uganda requires more time than Rwanda for a meaningful visit — we recommend a minimum of three to four days in addition to your Tanzania safari. The logistics involve a flight from Kilimanjaro to Entebbe (via Nairobi) and then domestic flights or road transfers within Uganda. Uganda's visa is included in the East Africa Tourist Visa alongside Kenya.

Ideal For

Repeat Tanzania visitors, primate enthusiasts, those with more time and a sense of adventure

Recommended Duration

16–20 days

Questions & Answers

Planning a Multi-Country Safari

Is Tanzania the best base for an East Africa multi-country safari?

Tanzania is the natural centre of East Africa multi-country travel. Kilimanjaro International Airport is the region's best-connected hub, Arusha is the departure point for the Northern Circuit, and Tanzania's safari product — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire — is generally considered Africa's finest. From Tanzania, it is a short flight to Nairobi (Kenya), Rwanda (gorillas), and Uganda (chimpanzees). The logistics of combining Tanzania with another East African destination are well-established and straightforward.

Should I add Kenya's Maasai Mara or Rwanda's gorillas to my Tanzania safari?

These are entirely different experiences, and the choice depends on what you most want from your trip. The Maasai Mara extends the Great Migration — if you are visiting during the river crossing season (July to October) and want to see both the Serengeti and Mara crossings, the combination is logical. Rwanda gorilla trekking is one of the world's great wildlife experiences — tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is profoundly moving and unlike anything else in Africa. Many of our guests who have the time do both: a Tanzania safari followed by gorillas, which is the most complete East Africa journey available.

How difficult is it to combine Tanzania with Rwanda or Uganda?

Surprisingly straightforward. Rwanda and Uganda are both reachable by short flights from Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Airport (via Nairobi or direct to Kigali). The Rwanda gorilla trekking experience requires a minimum of two nights in Rwanda — one day for the trek itself and one as a buffer in case of weather cancellations. Uganda requires more time: chimpanzee trekking and the NileSourceSERIF add-ons make it a minimum of three to four additional days. Both are entirely doable; the question is simply how much time you have.

What is the best order for a Tanzania and Rwanda combination?

We generally recommend Tanzania first — safari, then Rwanda. The pace of a gorilla trek is active and requires reasonable fitness. Arriving exhausted from a long flight to Rwanda and immediately attempting the trek is not ideal. A Tanzania safari first, with its early mornings and long game drives, actually builds the kind of fitness and early-rising habit that serves you well on a gorilla trek. You arrive in Rwanda rested, acclimatised to the region, and ready for one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth.

Do I need separate visas for Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda?

Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda all participate in the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers all three countries for $100 USD and allows multiple entries over 90 days. The visa is available at arrival points for most nationalities. Tanzania is not currently part of the EATVisa scheme — you will need a separate Tanzania visa ($50 USD) in addition to the EATVisa. We handle all visa guidance as part of the safari planning process.
