The Arrival Changes the Experience
How you reach your first camp is not a logistical detail β it is the opening chapter of your safari. The decision between a light aircraft flight and a private drive shapes the first story you tell yourself about the trip. Here is the honest account of both.

Fly-In
Light aircraft from Arusha to a private airstrip serving your camp. The flight takes 45β90 minutes and offers extraordinary aerial views of the landscape below β the Rift Valley walls, the changing vegetation, the distant herds. You arrive at camp having barely touched the ground.
Best For
- β¦Northern Circuit: Arusha to Serengeti or Ngorongoro
- β¦Combining multiple camps β fly between properties without backtracking
- β¦Maximising time on safari rather than in transit
- β¦Arriving fresh β no long drive after an international flight
- β¦Southern Circuit access β Ruaha and Nyerere require flights
Less Ideal For
- βBudget-conscious travellers β flights are an additional cost
- βTravellers who want to see the Tanzanian landscape at ground level
- βShort trips under 5 days β flight logistics compress available time
Cost
From $380 per person per flight segment
Duration
45β90 minutes Arusha to Northern Serengeti

Drive-In
Your guide drives you from Arusha in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser. The journey takes 6β8 hours to the central Serengeti, or 3β4 hours to Ngorongoro. It is not a short day, but it is not unpleasant β and it is one of the most reliable places on earth to see wildlife en route.
Best For
- β¦Seeing wildlife on the way β the road between Arusha and Ngorongoro passes through Lake Manyara National Park
- β¦Budget-conscious travellers who have more time than money
- β¦Travellers who want the full Tanzania landscape experience
- β¦Short trips where flight scheduling would compress the itinerary
- β¦Comfortable travellers who prefer a private vehicle to a light aircraft
Less Ideal For
- βThose with limited time β a full drive day removes one from wildlife viewing
- βTravellers arriving on late international flights β too long after a long-haul journey
- βSouthern Circuit β roads to Ruaha and Nyerere are very long
Cost
Included in your safari package β no additional flight cost
Duration
6β8 hours Arusha to Central Serengeti
Questions
Fly-In vs Drive-In β FAQ
Is a fly-in safari worth the extra cost?
+
For most luxury travellers, yes β with a condition. A fly-in safari is worth the additional cost when time is your most constrained resource. If you have 7 days and want to maximise wildlife viewing rather than spend one of them in a vehicle, the flight is worth every cent. If you have 10 days and want to experience the landscape as well as the wildlife, the drive offers something the flight cannot β a ground-level relationship with the terrain. We help our clients make this calculation based on their actual available time.
Is the light aircraft safe?
+
Tanzania's charter aircraft fleet is well-maintained and professionally operated. The aircraft used for safari transfers β typically Cessna Caravans and similar turboprops β are extremely reliable and flown by experienced pilots who know the airstrips intimately. The airstrips themselves are rough β red-dirt landing strips in the middle of the bush β but that is true of every quality safari operation. Safety standards for Tanzanian charter flights are set by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority and are equivalent to international standards.
Can I combine fly-in and drive-in on the same trip?
+
Absolutely β and this is often the ideal structure. Fly into the Serengeti, spend time there, then drive back to Ngorongoro and Arusha. Or drive in, do the Northern Circuit by vehicle, then fly from a remote airstrip to the Southern Circuit. This kind of mixed itinerary is precisely how we design Bobby Safaris trips for clients who want both the aerial perspective and the ground-level journey.
What does the drive actually feel like?
+
The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti is a long day, but it is a beautiful one. You pass through Maasai villages, coffee farms, and the wall of the Rift Valley. The road between Arusha and Ngorongoro enters Lake Manyara National Park β where you will likely see elephant, giraffe, and baboon from the vehicle. Between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, the landscape opens into the endless golden plains. Your guide will stop for a proper lunch β not a picnic in the vehicle. It is a travelling day, but it is not a wasted one.
What if I arrive on a late international flight?
+
We never schedule a long drive or a flight for the same day as a late-arriving international flight. Our standard protocol is: arrive at JRO, transfer to an Arusha lodge, rest, and begin the safari the following morning. If your international flight arrives in the afternoon, we build in an Arusha night before any travel. If it arrives in the morning, we can begin the drive or arrange a same-day flight, depending on the destination. We plan this specifically with each client.
