Of all the months to visit Tanzania, September is the one about which we are most unambiguous. This is the month when the dry season reaches its zenith, the migration crossings are at their most dramatic, and the combination of a northern circuit safari with a Kilimanjaro summit — or a Zanzibar extension — works without compromise.October-November Tanzania Safari is worth exploring alongside this destination.
The case for September is straightforward: the weather is settled and cool, the wildlife is concentrated and active, the parks are accessible, and the conditions on Kilimanjaro are among the finest of the year. The counter-consideration is price — September falls within peak season, and the finest camps book 8-12 months in advance. But for guests who plan ahead, September delivers the full depth of what Tanzania is capable of offering.

Weather and Climate in Tanzania in September
September delivers the finest weather conditions of the Tanzania safari calendar. The long dry season is at its midpoint — rain is effectively absent across the Northern Circuit, humidity is low, and the air is clear and dust-free.
In the Serengeti and across the Northern Circuit, daytime temperatures sit between 14°C and 27°C — warm enough for comfortable game drives without the oppressive heat of October and November. Mornings are cool, often dropping to 10-12°C before sunrise, which makes the early morning game drive departures genuinely bracing. As the sun rises, conditions quickly become pleasant.
The Ngorongoro Crater rim is cooler — temperatures at 2,300 metres can drop to 5°C at night, with daytime highs around 20°C. The crater floor, at 600 metres lower elevation, is warmer and one of the most comfortable places in Tanzania for a game drive at this time of year.
Zanzibar in September is warm and settled. Humidity is lower than in the summer months, the sea is calm, and the combination of a safari and a Zanzibar beach extension works particularly well at this time of year. The island receives minimal rainfall throughout September.
Kilimanjaro in September sits in the middle of the optimal climbing window. The Rongai and Northern Circuit routes, which approach the mountain from the north, receive the least rainfall and offer the clearest summit views. The Southern Circuit routes remain dry. Above 4,000 metres, temperatures at night drop to -10°C to -15°C — cold, but the lack of wind and low precipitation makes September one of the most comfortable high-altitude months on the mountain.
September Safari — What You Will See
September is peak season for the Great Migration, and the wildlife spectacle is as intense as anything Tanzania offers across the entire calendar. The following represent the highlights of a September safari.
The Great Migration — Mara River Crossings The migration herds have moved north through the central Serengeti and are now concentrated in the northern corridor, preparing to cross the Mara River into the Masai Mara in Kenya. The crossings themselves — daily events in September — are among the most dramatic wildlife moments on Earth. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest crowd the river banks, and the crossing can last hours as animals press forward in single file. The crocodiles have been waiting since the previous crossings of July and August; they are hungry and precise. On the banks, lions, hyenas, and cheetahs pick off animals that lag behind. To witness a crossing in full is to understand why Tanzania's northern circuit is considered the finest safari destination on Earth.
The Big Five at Their Finest September is one of the best months for consistent Big Five sightings. Lions are highly active — the concentrations of prey animals mean prides are well-fed and comfortable, allowing close approach. Leopard sightings in the northern Serengeti are excellent, particularly along the Mara River corridor where these cats favour the riverine woodland. Rhino sightings in the Ngorongoro Crater are more likely in September than in the green season, as animals concentrate around permanent water sources. Elephant herds are scattered but visible across Tarangire and the Ndutu region.
Predator Action September is predator season in the truest sense. Lion prides following the migration herds are highly active, making kills regularly. The cheetah of the northern Serengeti — a population that has been studied for over 40 years — are visible on the open plains. Spotted hyena clans are in the northern Serengeti in force, competing with lions for the migration carcass. The leopard sightings along the Mara River are among the finest in Africa.
Why September Is the Best Month for Kilimanjaro
September sits in the middle of the optimal Kilimanjaro climbing window — June through October — and offers the most favourable combination of dry conditions, clear skies, and moderate crowds of any month in the year.
Conditions on the Mountain The long dry season means the trails are firm and clear, without the mud and standing water of the green season months. The summit of Kibo is typically visible from base camp on most mornings — an inspiring sight that climbers in the green season often miss entirely. Precipitation is at its lowest annual levels. The lack of moisture also means the trails are less degraded than in August, which sees the highest volume of climbers.
Summit Success Rates September's weather conditions produce some of the highest summit success rates of the year. The combination of clear skies, low wind, and dry trails means climbers face fewer environmental obstacles on summit night. The altitude remains the challenge — acute mountain sickness does not respect calendar months — but the weather variable is at its most favourable.
The Rongai Route Advantage in September The Rongai route, which approaches Kilimanjaro from the north near the Kenyan border, receives the least rainfall of any route in September. This route is also the quietest of the main routes during this period, after the peak August traffic on the Machame and Lemosho routes. For guests who want a quieter approach with equally excellent conditions, Rongai in September is our recommended route.
Combining Safari and Summit September is one of the few months when a combined Tanzania safari and Kilimanjaro climb works logistically and meteorologically. After five or six days on Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar makes an ideal recovery destination — warm, calm, and restorative. We have designed numerous September itineraries combining all three, and the flow of the journey — from the drama of the migration, to the quiet determination of the summit, to the turquoise shallows of the Zanzibar channel — is unlike anything else Tanzania offers.
Zanzibar in September — The Perfect Ending
September is one of the finest months to visit Zanzibar. The short rains of November are still weeks away, humidity is lower than the summer months, and the sea is flat and clear. The island transitions from recovery destination to destination in its own right.
Stone Town's narrow streets are best explored in the cooler morning hours, before the midday sun reaches its height. The spice farms of the interior are lush and fragrant. The diving and snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll and the Pemba Channel — among the finest marine environments in the Indian Ocean — is at its clearest in September.
For guests arriving from a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb, Zanzibar in September provides the thermal contrast that makes the journey feel complete: from the cool highlands of the crater to the warm shallows of the Zanzibar channel.
What to Pack for Tanzania in September
September's dry, cool conditions simplify packing compared to the green season, but the altitude range — from sea level at Zanzibar to 5,895 metres on Kilimanjaro's summit — requires careful thought.
Safari Layering Temperatures on game drives range from 10°C at sunrise to 27°C by midday. A layering system is essential: a base layer, a mid-layer fleece or light down jacket for the morning drives, and a windproof shell. Neutral earth tones — khaki, stone, olive — are the correct choice for safari clothing.
Kilimanjaro Specifics For guests combining a safari with a Kilimanjaro climb, the packing requirements are significantly more involved. Summit night on Kilimanjaro involves temperatures of -10°C to -15°C with wind chill — a completely different environment from the safari. Technical layering for high altitude, good quality thermal boots, and proper summit gear are non-negotiable. We provide a detailed kit list to all clients booked on Kilimanjaro itineraries.
Zanzibar Lightweight cotton and linen clothing is appropriate for Zanzibar. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential. A light layer for evenings on Stone Town's waterfront is useful.
September vs August vs October
How September compares to its neighbours on the calendar
| Month | Wildlife | Weather | Verdict | Kilimanjaro |
