The Ultra-Luxury Safari + Golf Itinerary: East Africa's Private Courses as the Next Frontier
The world's most consequential conversations have always happened far from the office. Now UHNWI families are discovering that a fairway in the Serengeti β with wildlife visible from the clubhouse β is a better venue than Scotland for the deal-making trip that also needs to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Kilimanjaro Golf Club and the northern highlands β the starting point for an East African golf and safari itinerary
The Case for Golf on the Serengeti Fairway
The origins of golf and the origins of the deal are the same: both happen far from the office, in settings designed to lower defences. For centuries, the world's most consequential conversations have unfolded on the fairway rather than in the conference room. The visual richness of the landscape, the pace of the walk between shots, the shared challenge of a difficult lie β these are not coincidences. They are design features.
That logic is why a growing segment of ultra-high-net-worth family offices are asking a different question when planning a Tanzania safari: not whether to add a round, but where, and how. East Africa now has the infrastructure to answer both parts of that question convincingly. The courses are there. The logistics are manageable. And the combination β wildlife on one horizon, a precision shot on the other β is unlike anything available in the conventional golf circuit.
Why UHNWI Families Are Adding Golf to Their Safari
The global golf tourism market has grown consistently over the past decade, driven partly by the same demographic that travels for safaris: older, experienced, asset-light in their leisure preferences but asset-rich in their willingness to pay for access. For UHNWI families, the calculus is more specific.
The deal-making environment. The fairway is one of the few remaining settings where hierarchy flattens. A four-hour round removes the theatre of the boardroom. Conversations that would require a formal agenda in another context happen naturally over a shared problem β a sand trap, a misread putt. For family offices structuring deals across generations, or for principals conducting relationship capital work with advisors and counterparties, the format itself is the asset.
The multi-generational dimension. Golf is one of the few sports where a twelve-year-old and a seventy-year-old can compete on meaningful terms in the same foursome. Unlike big-game fishing or horseback riding, there is no physical-age threshold that excludes either end of the generational spectrum. A grandfather who has played his entire life can walk the same fairway as grandchildren holding a club for the first time, and both find it worthwhile. This is not a trivial consideration for families who are paying for an experience that needs to deliver across a wide range of ages and physical capacities.
The Tanzania context. An East African safari already signals that the family is serious about experience over comfort. Adding golf elevates that signal without diluting it. The combination communicates that the family has done this enough times to know what they want β and that what they want is not available at any resort they can book through a travel agent.
The Three Courses Worth Knowing About
Kilimanjaro Golf Club, Arusha
At 1,400 metres above sea level, the Kilimanjaro Golf Club sits in Tanzania's highland belt β cooler than the national park circuit, with a European-style approach to course maintenance. The elevation means the ball travels further than at sea level, which experienced golfers find genuinely useful for club selection.
The course is adjacent to Tanzania's coffee-growing region. A morning round can be followed by a private coffee-tasting tour within the same property β a pairing that works particularly well for guests who are also evaluating Tanzania as a potential destination for wider family travel or investment due diligence. The Arusha airstrip is forty-five minutes by road, making it accessible from any of the northern safari circuits by light aircraft.
Arusha Coffee Lodge Course
The Arusha Coffee Lodge nine-hole par-3 is designed differently: it is built for guests who are not golfers and families with young children. The holes are short, forgiving, and set within a working coffee plantation. The sensory contrast is deliberate β you play between rows of coffee plants, with the scent of the estate in the morning air.
For a family where some members want to play and others want no part of the game, this course resolves the tension without anyone feeling they compromised. The same lodge serves as a base for the northern safari circuits, so the scheduling flexibility is practical as well as social.
The Private Concession Course
Tanzania's most exclusive camps β those operating on private wildlife conservancy land β maintain their own courses to USGA specification, fed by borehole irrigation and maintained to standards that rival leading European clubs. These are not public-access courses. They exist for camp guests only, which means the experience of playing them includes something no conventional golf destination can offer: wildlife moving through the rough, and a game drive beginning two hundred metres from the eighteenth hole.
For families who have exhausted the standard safari circuit and are looking for a next-tier experience, the private concession course is the answer. It requires forward planning β these tee times are arranged as part of the itinerary, not booked separately β and they are subject to seasonal availability. Bobby Safaris manages the scheduling directly with the camp operators.
How to Structure the Itinerary
The practical integration of golf into a safari itinerary follows the geography:
Days 1β3: Arusha arrival. Play Kilimanjaro Golf Club on Days 1 and 2. Overnight at Arusha Coffee Lodge. A coffee estate tour fills the late afternoon of Day 2.
Day 4: Private charter from Arusha airstrip to the Serengeti. Flight time is approximately forty-five minutes. A camp vehicle meets the aircraft on the ground.
Days 5β7:Two game drives per day, structured around the camp's daily schedule. If the concession course is available, a round is arranged on the morning of Day 5 or 6 β typically a dawn start to avoid the midday heat and to align with the best wildlife-viewing conditions.
Day 8:Private departure via the camp's dedicated airstrip.
Bobby Safaris handles all logistics from the moment of international arrival to the moment of departure. The client travels with clubs and personal items; everything else is managed.
Planning Note
The private concession courses require lead time to confirm. Availability depends on the camp's booking calendar and the season β high-demand periods (June through October) book several months in advance. For families considering a multi-generational trip where golf is part of the programme, the earliest possible contact β ideally six months ahead β makes the difference between a confirmed tee time and a waiting list.
Private charter logistics and multi-generational safari planning are handled as part of the same consultation. Bobby Safaris structures each itinerary from first conversation to final departure. There are no template itineraries for this combination.
