Wildebeest herds crossing the Serengeti plains at golden hour

Timing Your Safari to the Actual Herds, Not the Calendar

Most migration content tells you the herds arrive in July and leave in October. That is a simplification that is useful for marketing and almost useless for planning.

The wildebeest follow rain. Not calendar months. When the short rains arrive in November, the herds begin drifting south. When the long rains end in May, they fan out across the western corridor. The precise timing of calving, mating, and river crossings varies by four to six weeks every single year. A July crossing that was spectacular in 2024 may not reach its peak until mid-August in 2026.

Bobby Safaris tracks actual herd positions through the season and routes clients accordingly. The calendar is a starting hypothesis. The plan is what the animals are actually doing when you arrive.

The Four Migration Phases, Honestly Described

Calving: December through March — Southern Ndutu

Dec–Mar

Wildebeest drop their calves on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. The timing varies year to year, but the peak is typically late January into early February. The calves can run within minutes of birth — a necessity when lion, hyena, and cheetah are drawn to the vulnerable newborns by the thousands. This is the most predator-dense period of the year anywhere in Africa. Vehicle density outside peak season months is low. The tradeoff is that some of the most sought-after camps in this zone fill months in advance.

Green Season: April through June — Western Corridor

Apr–Jun

The herds move west following rainfall patterns, feeding on the lush vegetation of the western corridor and central Serengeti. Rivers are full. Vegetation is at its most dramatic. Fewer visitors; some of the finest camps offer their lowest rates. Photography without crowding is genuinely achievable. The trade-off is afternoon rainfall and some roads becoming difficult. For the traveller who is flexible and prioritises experience over predictability, this is consistently the best value window in the migration calendar.

River Crossings: July through October — Northern Kogatende

Jul–Oct

This is what the migration looks like in the popular imagination. Millions of wildebeest ford the Mara River against crocodiles in crossings witnessed at multiple points along the northern Serengeti border. The visual drama is undeniable. So is the vehicle density at the most famous crossing points. The premium pricing during these months reflects the demand. Booking six to nine months ahead is the norm for the limited inventory of high-end camps in the Kogatende area.

Return South: November — Central and Western

Nov

By November, the herds have begun drifting back through the central Serengeti toward the southern plains. The crossings at this stage are less dramatic and less documented. They are also less crowded. The southern Ndutu plains are beginning to green. The calving season is eight to twelve weeks away. This window is systematically under-valued by travellers and agents alike.

Where Ultra-Luxury Changes the Timing Calculation

Most migration timing advice is written for groups sharing vehicles at established crossing points. The ultra-luxury experience is structurally different.

Bobby Safaris repositions clients by light aircraft, not game drive vehicle. A six-hour transfer between zones becomes a forty-minute flight. That changes which camps make sense and which crossing points are accessible. A client who wants to be at the right crossing point at the right moment — because their guide has been tracking a specific herd for forty-eight hours — arrives differently than someone who has driven to a known crossing and waited.

The result is that for our clients, the optimal timing window is wider. The green season months of May and June offer genuine migration viewing with none of the July-October crowding. November offers active wildlife with near-exclusive game drives in zones that will be busy in eight weeks time.

What 'Right' Actually Means

If witnessing a Mara River crossing live is non-negotiable, July through October is your window. Bring flexibility on exact dates. The crossing does not respect your itinerary.

If experiencing calving season with low vehicle density is the priority, late January into early February delivers the predator density and the absence of crowds. The difference from July to October in terms of what you actually witness is significant — not lesser, different.

The wrong choice is doing what everyone else does because it was easy to book. The right choice is the one that matches what you actually want to experience.

Planning Lead Time

Private camps serving migration zones hold small inventories. For peak crossing season — July through October — six to nine months is the realistic minimum for properties with genuinely exclusive access to the best viewing points. Twelve months ahead is not unusual for the most sought-after camps.

For calving season, the window is similar: January and February properties fill early. The green season months — April through June — offer the most flexibility, with quality inventory available four to six months ahead in most cases.
