Most luxury travellers operate from a false assumption: that high season (July through October) is always the best time for a Tanzania safari. This assumption is understandable — it is what the travel industry has been selling for decades. But it is wrong in ways that matter.
Each month in Tanzania produces a genuinely distinct wildlife experience. The calving season of January and February bears no meaningful resemblance to the Mara River crossings of July and August. The green season landscapes of April and May are more beautiful than anything the dry season produces. And September — the most consistently undervalued month in the calendar — offers near-peak wildlife with a fraction of the visitor numbers and a meaningful reduction in cost.
This calendar assesses every month honestly. The goal is not to declare winners and losers, but to help you understand what you are actually buying when you choose a travel month — and why the decision is more nuanced than your travel agent may be letting on.
The Three Season Tiers
Tanzania's safari calendar divides into three cost and crowd tiers. Each tier produces a different experience; none is objectively superior to the others.
Peak Season
£££July · August · OctoberWildebeest migration river crossings; maximum wildlife density; highest camp pricing; advance booking essential 12+ months.
Wildlife character
Migration at its most dramatic; big predator concentrations around river crossing points.
Crowd level
July and August are the busiest months. Vehicle density at major sightings is significant.
Worth it for the Migration specifically. July–August pricing requires advance commitment.
Shoulder Season
££April · May · NovemberGreen season value; dramatically lower camp rates; private concessions nearly empty; excellent predator sightings.
Wildlife character
Newborn wildlife (April–May); migratory birds present (November); predator encounters consistent.
Crowd level
Private concessions and less-visited areas are near-empty. Even popular areas have few vehicles.
Best overall value. The case for shoulder season is strong for every traveller who is not fixated on the Migration.
Quiet Season
£January · February · March · June · September · DecemberShort dry season months and transitional periods offering excellent all-round conditions at moderate pricing.
Wildlife character
January–February: calving season, concentrated predators. June: beginning of dry season, excellent leopard sightings. September: post-migration return, optimal conditions. December: short rains beginning, landscapes transforming.
Crowd level
September is the quietest peak-equivalent month. January–February and December have moderate festive-season traffic.
September is the most undervalued month in the calendar. January–February is peak calving — a completely different experience from peak season.
“The most common mistake I see is travellers equating expensive with better. The migration crossings are extraordinary — but February's calving season produces wildlife density and predator action that the river crossings simply cannot match. And November gives you a private Serengeti.”

The Shoulder Season Proposition
The most sophisticated argument for April, May, and November is not cost — it is experience quality. Private concessions are near-empty. Your game drive vehicle may be the only one at a pride of lions. The landscapes are green and beautiful in a way the dry season cannot match. Birdlife includes migratory species from Europe and Asia that are simply not present in the July–October window.
The trade-offs are real: afternoon rain (typically after your morning game drive, when wildlife is most active), some rough roads, and a smaller selection of open camps. But for the traveller who wants to experience Tanzania as it actually is — a wild, beautiful, largely empty landscape — shoulder season delivers something that peak season cannot: genuine solitude in one of the world's great wilderness areas.
Peak season camps can run two to three times shoulder-season rates. For that premium, you are buying access to the Migration crossings and guaranteed camp availability — not a meaningfully better wildlife experience. If the river crossings are not on your non-negotiable list, April and November are the finest months in the calendar.
How Bobby Safaris Uses This Calendar
We do not recommend peak season because it is the most expensive. We recommend the month that delivers the specific experience you have described to us. For some travellers, that is July or August — the Migration crossings genuinely justify the premium for the traveller who has been dreaming of them. For others, November offers everything they actually want, at a fraction of the cost, with none of the vehicle crowding.
Our advance planning service holds preferred camp availability twelve to eighteen months out for existing clients — ensuring that when you decide to return, the camp that made your last trip exceptional is available again. For new clients, we work backwards from your target month and target experience to identify the properties that are actually appropriate, rather than simply naming the most expensive options.
We build itineraries around your target experience, not the highest-margin season. If you tell us you want to see the Migration crossings, we will tell you honestly whether July or August is the right window — and we will explain why September may actually serve you better if crowd levels and value are part of your calculation.
The best time for your Tanzania safari is the time that matches your priorities. There is no universally correct answer — only the answer that is correct for what you want to experience, what you are willing to spend, and how far in advance you are planning.
Share your target month when you enquire. We will give you an honest assessment of what you will actually experience — including whether a different month might deliver more of what you are looking for.
