A bespoke Tanzania safari is not a standard itinerary with a luxury label attached. It is a trip designed around you — your interests, your pace, your goals for the experience. It requires a different kind of planning, and a different kind of operator: one that knows the land intimately, has relationships with the right camps and guides, and can build something genuinely tailored rather than selecting from a menu of fixed packages.
This guide is for the traveller who is ready to move beyond the package holiday and wants to understand how bespoke safari planning actually works — and what it costs to do it properly. New to safari? Our first-timer's guide covers what to expect on your first game drive.
How We Plan a Bespoke Safari
Bespoke Tanzania Safari Guide
We begin with a conversation, not a form. We want to understand what you are actually looking for: the wildlife you most want to see, the pace you prefer, whether this is a celebration or a return trip, who you are travelling with and what they need. A honeymoon is planned differently from a multi-generational family safari. A first safari is different from a fifth. The answers shape everything.
Bespoke Tanzania Safari Guide
Timing determines everything in Tanzania. The migration moves through different areas at different times of year. The parks are at their most beautiful — and most crowded — at different points in the season. Your interests and availability need to be matched to the right window. We will tell you honestly when the best time for your specific goals is, even if that means recommending you wait six months rather than pushing you toward a suboptimal booking.
Bespoke Tanzania Safari Guide
Tanzania's northern circuit has five or six distinct areas, each offering a different experience. The Serengeti's endless plains. The Ngorongoro Crater's geological drama. The private conservancies' exclusivity. Tarangire in the green season. We do not send every guest to the same itinerary. We match your interests to the right areas — which sometimes means skipping the most famous parks in favour of something better suited to what you want.
Bespoke Tanzania Safari Guide
At this level, the guide is the experience. We assign guides based on specific criteria: their knowledge of the areas you are visiting, their communication style, their ability to read guests' moods and calibrate the pace. We have 15 guides on our roster and we use them differently for different guests. Your itinerary will specify the guide assigned — and that guide will be briefed on your interests before you arrive.

Accommodation options range from fly-camps to some of the finest luxury tented properties in Africa. The choice is not about 'best' — it is about right. A fly-camp in a private conservancy for two nights is the right experience for one guest. A crater rim lodge for two nights is right for another. We match accommodation to the experience, not to a price category.
The Decisions That Define the Experience
Private Vehicle vs Shared
At the bespoke level, a private vehicle is not a luxury upgrade — it is the only way to travel. You set the schedule, the pace, and the route. Your guide is entirely focused on your interests. We do not offer shared vehicles at Bobby Safaris. Why private beats group safaris.
National Parks vs Conservancies
The most complete Tanzania itinerary combines both. The national parks deliver the iconic experience — the crater, the famous migration crossing points. The private conservancies deliver the exclusive experience — solitude, night drives, walking. We recommend both.
Fixed Camp vs Mobile Camp
Mobile camps that follow the migration offer the most immersive wildlife access — you are always close to the action. Fixed luxury camps offer consistency, higher service levels, and more elaborate facilities. Some of our favourite itineraries mix both: mobile camp during the migration, fixed camp at Ngorongoro. See our full camp and accommodation guide.
Duration and Pace
Rushing is the most common mistake in Tanzania safari planning. Guests who try to cover too many parks in too few days arrive somewhere they have already moved on from. We will always recommend fewer locations and deeper time in each — it is the right advice even if it means a shorter itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I plan a bespoke Tanzania safari?
For peak season (July–October), book 8 to 12 months ahead. The finest camps in private conservancies — the ones worth staying in — fill 12 months ahead for the migration season. For the rest of the year, 4 to 6 months is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings are possible but will limit your accommodation options significantly. We have secured bookings with 6 weeks' notice in low season — but never in peak.
How long should a Tanzania safari be?
The minimum for a meaningful Tanzania safari is 6 nights — covering the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Anything shorter means you are moving too fast to settle into the experience. For a genuine luxury safari with time to absorb the experience, 10 to 14 nights is ideal. This allows you to include a private conservancy, the crater, and perhaps a fly-camping extension or Zanzibar beach component. Some of our guests stay 21 nights, split between mountain, safari, and coast.
What is included in a bespoke safari itinerary?
Everything you need: airport transfers, all internal transport (including light aircraft between locations), accommodation in your chosen tier, all meals, all park and conservancy fees, a private vehicle and dedicated guide throughout, scheduled activities (game drives, walking safaris, bush dinners, balloon flights), and emergency evacuation cover. International flights are the main element that is not included.
How does the private vehicle work at this level?
At Bobby Safaris, a private vehicle is standard on every bespoke itinerary — not an upgrade. You get a dedicated 4WD Land Cruiser configured for a maximum of six passengers, with a pop-top roof for game viewing. Your guide is with you for the duration of the safari — not swapped between groups, not changed mid-itinerary. The vehicle is yours. The schedule is yours. The pace is yours.
When is the best time to see the Great Migration?
The migration is a year-round cycle — there is no single 'best' time, only different experiences. River crossings (July–October) are the most dramatic. Calving season (January–February) on the Ndutu plains is extraordinary for predator action. The green season (April–June) is spectacular for birds, flowers, and solitude. We help guests choose the right timing based on what they most want to witness — not on what is most convenient for us.
What makes a Tanzania safari 'ultra-luxury'?
At this level, luxury is not about thread counts — it is about access, exclusivity, and curation. A private conservancy with four vehicles maximum at any sighting. A guide who has spent 20 years in the bush and knows where the leopards den. A bush dinner set up at a kopje your guide has been saving for you. A balloon flight that lands to a Champagne breakfast in the middle of nowhere. The luxury is in the details — and in the fact that everything has been arranged specifically for you.
