The classic Northern Circuit is the trip that built the reputation of Tanzania safaris, and a 7-day itinerary is the most efficient way to do it well. Seven nights across Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti, fly-in throughout, one senior guide for the duration, and the camps our family would choose for our own week away. It is not a rushed version of a longer trip — it is the trip we run for friends visiting from abroad who have a week and a serious interest in seeing the country properly. Long enough to do the Northern Circuit without compression, short enough to commit to without rearranging a year, structured so that you leave having seen the country rather than sampled it. Bobby Safaris has been refining this exact trip for decades. It is the one we would design for a member of our own family visiting from abroad.
The shape of the week
The 7-day itinerary follows a deliberately simple skeleton. Day one is a private transfer from Kilimanjaro to Arusha, an overnight, and a briefing with your guide. Day two is a fly-in to Tarangire with an afternoon game drive. Day three is a full day in Tarangire. Day four is a morning fly to the Ngorongoro Crater and a half-day on the crater floor. Day five is a drive into the highlands with an optional visit to Olduvai Gorge. Day six is a fly to the central Serengeti with an afternoon game drive. Day seven is a morning drive, brunch, and a fly back to Kilimanjaro. Each day is anchored on a single wildlife objective, and each transfer is short. There is no day spent on the road, no one-night stopover, and no rushed morning. The pattern is simple because the trip should feel simple — the complexity that matters (guide, camps, routing) has already been worked out before you arrive.
01 — The Northern Circuit
Three landscapes that work together
Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti are not interchangeable. Each is a different ecosystem with a different reason to visit. Tarangire in the dry season holds the highest elephant density in Tanzania, large baobab-studded landscapes, and quiet game-viewing without the vehicle density of the more famous parks. The crater floor delivers the most reliable big-game viewing in East Africa in a single afternoon: lion, black rhino, hyena, and the full predator cast, all on a closed 260-square-kilometre bowl. The Serengeti is the country's signature landscape — wide horizons, big cats on the grasslands, and the great migration depending on the month. Seven days is the minimum that lets you experience all three without compression, and it is the right minimum because anything shorter means dropping one of them. Our team has been routing guests through exactly this combination for four generations. The zones work together because each one carries a different kind of memory: Tarangire for the elephants, the crater for the density, the Serengeti for the scale.

02 — Fly-In Routing
Four light-aircraft legs, no wasted days
Most 7-day Tanzania itineraries lose their advantage on the road. The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti is roughly eight hours; the drive from the crater to the central Serengeti is roughly three. Without fly-in routing, you lose a full day to the road and arrive at camp tired rather than ready for an afternoon drive. The 7-day classic removes that tax: Kilimanjaro to Tarangire on day two, Tarangire to the crater rim on day four, the crater rim to the Serengeti on day six, the Serengeti back to Kilimanjaro on day seven. Every full day is spent in the field. The longest road transfer is roughly 45 minutes. The bush flights also turn transit into part of the experience — the views from a Caravan over the Rift Valley, the moment the crater rim appears on the horizon, the pilot banking over the Grumeti woodlands as you descend. Fly-in routing is not a luxury upgrade; it is the structural choice that makes the trip feel like a safari rather than a transfer marathon.

03 — Guide Continuity
The same senior guide for the entire trip
The single biggest difference between a refined safari and a frantic one is guide continuity. Bobby Safaris assigns one senior guide for the duration of your 7-day itinerary — someone who knows Tarangire's elephant dynamics in September, the crater floor's lion prides in February, and the central Serengeti's cheetah territories in July. That continuity is what lets the second day feel informed by the first, and what lets your guide adjust the third day based on what you most enjoyed. We do not rotate guides between parks. The guide carries the safari, and the guide is yours for the duration. Our senior guides have spent between twelve and thirty years in the field. They read animal behaviour at a glance, they know which vehicle position gives the cleanest photographs, and they know when to be quiet. On a 7-day itinerary that expertise compounds — by day four, your guide is not just leading a drive; they are leading a trip that already knows what you care about.

04 — Pacing
Seven nights that feel unhurried
Seven nights is enough for the Northern Circuit without feeling rushed. The itinerary is paced for travellers who want to wake up without an alarm, eat breakfast at the camp rather than on the run, take a midday break when the light is flat, and end the day with sundowners rather than a rushed transfer. There is one full day in Tarangire rather than two half-days. There is a half-day on the crater floor and an extra night in the highlands, so the crater visit does not feel like a checklist. There are two nights in the Serengeti rather than one, so you can do one full morning drive and one full afternoon drive in the same ecosystem. The result is a trip that feels deliberate rather than abbreviated: the kind of itinerary our family runs for friends who have a week and a serious interest in seeing the country properly. We design against the exhausting version explicitly — there is no day on this itinerary where the schedule is tighter than what we would run for a member of our own family.

05 — Camps
Where you sleep matters as much as what you see
The 7-day classic uses one camp per zone — one in Tarangire, one on the crater rim or in the highlands, one in the Serengeti — so you unpack once per park and let the rhythm of each ecosystem set the pace. Tarangire nights are at a permanent lodge with elephant herds visible from the main deck; the crater night is on the rim, with the crater floor below and the volcanoes on the horizon; the Serengeti nights are at a permanent lodge in the central Serengeti or at a mobile camp that moves with the migration depending on the month. None of the camps on this itinerary are one-night stopovers; each is a place to settle in for two nights. Bobby Safaris does not list a fixed camp roster — the right property depends on the month, the party, and what you most want from the trip. Don personally selects each camp from a small set of properties he has visited repeatedly across decades of operating inside these parks.

How We Decide
A 7-day safari should still feel chosen.
- Fly-in routing is non-negotiable on a 7-day Northern Circuit: every road transfer is wasted wildlife time, and the itinerary here removes the transfer tax entirely.
- Guide continuity matters more than camp variety: the guide carries the safari, and we do not rotate guides between parks.
- Zone selection should bias toward reliability: Tarangire for elephants, the crater for big game in one sitting, the Serengeti for the landscape itself.
- Camp choice should protect downtime: one camp per zone, enough nights at each to actually settle in, no one-night stops anywhere on the itinerary.
- Pacing should give the crater a full night rather than a dawn-to-dusk dash: the rim itself is part of the experience, not a transit corridor.
