Fly-In Quick Safari

5-Day Quick Tanzania Safari

Five nights, three wildlife zones, one private guide — the most refined Tanzania itinerary our family can design when you have a week, not a fortnight.

A short safari is not a smaller safari. It is a tighter one. The cramming we leave to others. Five days for us is a curated deep-cut: Tarangire’s elephant herds, the Ngorongoro Crater in a single afternoon, and the Serengeti in the time that remains. Everything fly-in. One private guide for the duration. Camps our family would choose for our own week away. This is not a budget itinerary and it is not a hurried one — it is the trip that lets you experience Tanzania properly when five days is all you have. It is also the itinerary most of our returning guests wish they had started with: short enough to commit to without rearranging a year, long enough to leave a serious impression, and structured so that you leave having seen the country rather than sampled it. Bobby Safaris has been refining this exact trip for decades. It is the one we would design for a member of our own family visiting from abroad.

The shape of the week

The 5-day itinerary follows a deliberately simple skeleton. Day one is a fly-in to Tarangire with an afternoon game drive. Day two is a full day in Tarangire, the best elephant viewing in northern Tanzania. Day three is a morning fly to the Ngorongoro Crater and a half-day on the crater floor. Day four is a fly to the Serengeti (central or southern, depending on the month) with an afternoon drive. Day five is a morning drive and a fly back to Kilimanjaro. Each day is anchored on a single wildlife objective, and each transfer is short. There is no day spent on the road, no one-night stopover, and no rushed morning. The pattern is simple because the trip should feel simple, and because the complexity that matters — guide, camps, routing — has already been worked out before you arrive.

01 — Fly-In

Four light-aircraft legs, zero wasted days

Most short Tanzania itineraries lose their advantage on the road — five-hour drives between parks, half a day gone before the first proper drive. The 5-day itinerary removes that tax. You fly Kilimanjaro to Tarangire on day one, Tarangire to the Ngorongoro airstrip on day three, the crater rim to the Serengeti on day four, and the Serengeti back to Kilimanjaro on day five. Every full day is spent in the field. The longest road transfer of the entire trip is roughly 45 minutes, and most of those are the drive between your camp and the airstrip at either end. Fly-in routing is not a luxury upgrade on a short itinerary; it is the structural requirement that makes the trip feel like a safari rather than a transfer marathon. The bush flights also turn transit into part of the experience — the views from a Caravan over the Rift Valley, the moment the crater rim appears on the horizon, the pilot banking over the Grumeti woodlands as you descend — these are some of the most striking visual moments of the trip, and they cost you nothing in terms of wildlife time.

02 — Zones

The three landscapes that carry Tanzania

Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti are not interchangeable. Each is a different ecosystem with a different reason to visit. Tarangire in the dry season holds the highest elephant density in Tanzania, large baobab-studded landscapes, and quiet game-viewing without the vehicle density of the more famous parks. The crater floor delivers the most reliable big-game viewing in East Africa in a single afternoon: lion, black rhino, hyena, and the full predator cast, all on a closed 260-square-kilometre bowl you can traverse in hours. The Serengeti is the country’s signature landscape — wide horizons, big cats on the grasslands, and the great migration depending on the month. Five days is the minimum that lets you experience all three without compression, and it is the right minimum because anything shorter means dropping one of them. Our team has been routing guests through exactly this combination for four generations. The zones work together because each one carries a different kind of memory: Tarangire for the elephants, the crater for the density, the Serengeti for the scale. Drop any one of them and the trip loses something it cannot recover elsewhere.

03 — Guiding

The same senior guide for the entire trip

The single biggest difference between a refined short safari and a frantic one is guide continuity. Bobby Safaris assigns one senior guide for the duration of your 5-day itinerary — someone who knows Tarangire’s elephant dynamics in September, the crater floor’s lion prides in February, and the central Serengeti’s cheetah territories in July. That continuity is what lets the second day feel informed by the first, and what lets your guide adjust the third day based on what you most enjoyed. On shorter trips the temptation is to rotate guides between parks for logistical ease, and that rotation is exactly what makes a 5-day itinerary feel like a series of disconnected drives. We do not do that here. The guide carries the safari, and the guide is yours for the duration. Our senior guides have spent between twelve and thirty years in the field. They read animal behaviour at a glance, they know which vehicle position gives the cleanest photographs, and they know when to be quiet. On a 5-day itinerary that expertise compounds — by day three, your guide is not just leading a drive; they are leading a trip that already knows what you care about.

04 — Pacing

Days that feel unhurried even on a tight itinerary

Five nights is a short trip. It does not need to feel like one. The 5-day itinerary is paced for travellers who want to wake up without alarm, eat breakfast at the camp rather than on the run, take a midday break when the light is flat and the animals are resting, and end the day with sundowners rather than a rushed transfer. The drives are timed for the wildlife’s most active hours — golden-hour departures, late-morning returns, and an afternoon drive that lands you back at camp before the light fails. The result is a trip that feels deliberate rather than abbreviated: the kind of itinerary our family runs for friends who have a week and a serious interest in seeing the country properly. The pace is the difference between coming home rested and coming home exhausted; both are possible on a 5-day safari, but only one of them feels like a holiday. We design against the exhausting version explicitly — there is no day on this itinerary where the schedule is tighter than what we would run for a member of our own family. If you want a more intensive pace, we can build it; if you want to breathe, the default 5-day itinerary already does.

How We Decide

A short safari should still feel chosen.

  • Fly-in routing is non-negotiable on a 5-day trip: every road transfer is wasted wildlife time, and the itinerary here removes the transfer tax entirely.
  • Guide continuity matters more than camp variety on a short itinerary: the guide carries the safari, and we do not rotate guides between parks.
  • Zone selection should bias toward reliability: Tarangire for elephants, the crater for big game in one sitting, the Serengeti for the landscape itself.
  • Camp choice should protect downtime: one camp per zone, enough nights at each to actually settle in, no one-night stops anywhere on the itinerary.
